Padar Island sits in the heart of Komodo National Park, in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is the third-largest island in the archipelago. However, unlike Komodo Island, Padar is not primarily known for its dragons. Instead, it draws visitors for its extraordinary hilltop panorama.
After a moderately challenging hike up a wooden staircase, you reach the summit. From there, you see the island’s star-like shape and three distinct bays below. Each bay has sand of a different colour — white, charcoal black, and soft pink. As a result, the view is unlike anything else in Indonesia.
Rinca Island is one of three major islands within Komodo National Park. While Komodo Island is more famous, Rinca is widely regarded as the better choice for a guaranteed dragon sighting. This is because the smaller landmass and open savanna terrain make the animals much easier to spot.

The Secret of Foraminifera: The island’s striking pastel-pink shoreline gets its color from microscopic marine organisms called Foraminifera, which produce a red pigment on the coral reefs.
